Un-finding yourself

Throughout your teens, twenties and beyond, pressure seems to weigh down upon every aspect of your life.

Whether it be passing your final high school exams, taking responsibility for that group powerpoint presentation (that only you attended the seminar for) or struggling with a full time job, the pressure to succeed and excel across all areas is expected. What's more, it's all allegedly for your own benefit - or so everyone keeps telling you.

There's so many expectations and conventions that seem to be sparked into life as soon as you're blowing the candles on your cake each year. It's as if someone's placed a memo to interrogate you about your entire life's achievements inside every birthday invitation you've sent out.

'You know you really should start start thinking about your career now you've finished school.'

'I don't understand how you don't have a life goal - you are 14 after all.'

'Better get a move on before all the nice men are snapped up.'

Whilst the above statements may be slightly exaggerated, you get the gist.

Though I've always tended to grimace and reluctantly nod when faced with these remarks, I would much rather respond with 'Why don't you tell me? After all you have my life completely sussed out. Give me a clue what to do.'

Seriously, I really could do with a clue.

When you're faced with so much pressure externally, you naturally begin to feel it internally. I'm constantly asking myself what I'm doing with my life and whether I'm on the right path; comparing myself to others and wondering what my 'objectives' are.

As someone who has always detested that word, I'm not doing so well at reaching a conclusion.

That's if there even is one.

When you feel like you're constantly under scrutiny, it can be easy to think that to move on to the next stage of your life you need to tick box a, b and c. But you don't.

Just because one person follows a particular path doesn't mean that you have to, and just because someone else knows what their long term plans are doesn't mean that you have to.

Of course, knowing what your objective are is great, but so is not knowing. I'm tired of being told to 'find myself' when instead I hope that somewhere along the line the right thing will come and find me.

  1. Great wisdom. No one can direct our path truly and when you least expect it you will find what you love and it will guide you. Great pictures too.

  3. Beauty post girl and it's all very true. I think we all have the pressure from social norms but the truth is to just stick with who you are and just focus on yourself <3 Btw, LOVE the outfit and you look so gorgeous.

  4. Hell to the sassiest YEAH my gorgeous Georgia! Thank you so much for this truly important post with such a vital message. So relatable and reassuring, I feel you 100% on everything you covered. There seems to be more pressure heaped on us than ever, there's nothing worse than someone giving us grief over the way we're living our lives - or whether we're doing this or have achieved that to make us start questioning ourselves just because we don't meet their approval. There is definitely mystery and beauty in the unknown and I love the idea of un-finding ourselves so much! Speaking so much truth, it's just as fabulous to not know what our objectives are. Destiny and fate definitely lead us onto the right path, and even if we don't have objectives they are there to guide us. It feels as though everyone expects us to go down the "typical" route - get married, get a house, have a kid, work in the 9-5. But in all honestly most of those things are the complete opposite of what I want. Here's to un-finding ourselves in all our finery! Looking absolutely stunningly stylish in these gorgeous shots my babin' QUEEN! <3 <3 <3

  5. Beautiful photos and beautifully written post! I don't think there is one conclusion, I think there are many different ways to continue the story, a bit like in a creative writing task. And I don't believe there is a right or wrong either, all things come with advantages and disadvantages and sometimes it's good to realise what we don't want to do. After finishing school, I did a lot of different things and most of them showed me a direction I didn't want to go into and that was okay, eventually I realised what I was interested in. But I still don't have a clear objective, just loads of random ideas floating around. It's perfectly okay not to have a clear plan. xxx

  6. I absolutely love the concept behind this post! I've also never been one to buy into the whole 'follow this route' idea and especially when there's no guarantee that following the crowd will even end with happiness! I love this look on you by the way, fabulous leather trousers babe :)

  8. Your black jacket is awesome! A special item that transforme every look.
It is true, we are always under pression external and internal but I think it is harder because we are women. (ex. Why you don't have a boyfriend? Why you don't want to marry or having childrens?) We have to fight against it.
    Kisses,

  9. This is a really brilliantly worded post. I think a lot of us can identify with feeling people raising their eyebrows enquiringly at us and it can be so frustrating! Sometimes you just need to learn to ignore them and focus on your own path. :-)

  10. This is great advice, I'd never be where I am now if I had continued to be pushed into the live everyone else wanted me to have.
